How Can I Provide My UTA with Elevated Speedgrader Permissions?

Updated on

Typically, Undergraduate TAs (UTAs) are granted “edit only” access in Canvas which includes the ability to add/edit/ delete course files, assignments, discussions, etc. In some cases, however, instructors may also require their UTAs to have Speegrader access as part of their course responsibilities.

The process for granting users with elevated UTA grader access in Canvas has changed. The DLD no longer requires instructors to fill out a form. Now, instructors can process these elevated roles directly in Canvas.

How to Change a UTA to a UTA Grader

  1. Navigate to Canvas.brown.edu
  2. Select the course that you would like to provide your UTA with elevated grader access
  3. Select the people tab in the course navigation column
  4. Click the blue +Add/Remove Brown Users button
  1. In the space provided, enter the student's username
  2. Select the Undergraduate TA Grader role from the dropdown menu
  3. Verify the section you would like the UTA grader added to
  4. Click the blue Add Users button
  1. Review the UTA Grader exception acknowledgement and click the checkmark to confirm that you have read and understand the terms
  2. Click the blue Add Users button
  1. You will then see confirmation that the UTA grader request is processing and will be completed within the next 5 minutes

To check that a UTA grader has been added to your site, click the People tab in your course navigation, then review the course roster.

Common Brown Users LTI Errors

Expand or collapse content Incorrect Role Requested

If a role is selected that exceeds the permission of a user, an error will occur and you will see an alert. This typically occures when an undergraduate student is assigned the role of a TA via the role dropdown. Undergraduate student cannot hold the role of a TA due to FERPA restrictions, thus resulting in an error during this process.

To correct this error, please select the UTA grader role rather than TA role from the dropdown menu.

Expand or collapse content User is not an Undergraduate Student

The UTA Grader role is designed to specifically support undergraduate students. If a user with a graduate or administrative account is added as a UTA Grader to a course, this will result in an error and the role change will not process.

To correct this error, please select a user with an Undergraduate designation before proceeding with the UTA Grader process
