What Learning Tools Are Available At Brown?

Brown's team of learning designers and technologists regularly reviews digital learning tools to ensure our communities have a safe and high quality experience. 

DLD Supported

The following tools are purchased centrally by Brown and have been reviewed for privacy, security, and accessibility. DLD provides support and training, in partnership with the IT Service Center

Course Management
  • Canvas LMS 
    • Brown's learning management system for courses. Use Canvas to organize materials, communicate with your class, provide assessments, and more. Available for credit-bearing courses and approved non-traditional course sites.
       
  • Google Classroom 
    • A simple learning platform made to streamline the process sharing course materials and providing basic assessments. Available for anyone at Brown. 
       
  • Google Sites for courses
    • A simple website builder that can be used to organize information and course materials in webpage form. Available for anyone at Brown. 
Communication and Discussion
  • Ed Discussion
    • A question & answer platform that allows students, instructors and TAs to discuss course related topics. Available through Canvas for courses and as a standalone application for anyone at Brown.
       
  • Harmonize
    • An alternative to the discussion tool built into Canvas that enables media-rich discussions and includes more advanced features like multiple due dates and a grid display. Available through Canvas. 
       
  • Hypothesis 
    • A social annotation platform that allows individual to highlight and comment on texts as a group. Available through Canvas. 
       
  • Slack for courses
    • A chat application with advanced features that enables informal learning and general class communications. Enabled through Canvas for courses and available as a web application. 
       
  • Zoom for courses
    • A video conferencing tool for hosting live class sessions, office hours, recorded lectures and other forms of remote teaching. Zoom for Canvas streamlines meeting setup and transfers recordings to the Media Library automatically. Available through Canvas for courses and as a standalone application for anyone at Brown. 
Media, Content Creation, Collaboration
  • Atomic Journals
    • A journaling tool designed to promote reflective writing throughout an online or hybrid course. Available through Canvas. 
       
  • Google Apps
    • A suite of digital tools including Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Forms, and Slides that facilitate collaboration and information sharing. Available for anyone at Brown. 
       
  • Google Jamboard (going away December 2024)
    • A collaborative whiteboard software that enables visual brainstorming, annotation, and information presentation. Available for anyone at Brown until the product is discontinued in late 2024. We invite instructors to submit digital whiteboard tool feedback as Brown evaluates alternatives to Jamboard. 
       
  • GoReact
    • A media submission platform designed for performance-based feedback and collective video/audio annotation. Available through Canvas for a limited number of users. 
       
  • Panopto Media Library 
    • A media platform that hosts a range of media like lecture capture, online movies, Zoom recordings, and video/audio uploaded by instructors and students. Available through Canvas for courses and as a standalone web service for anyone at Brown. Panopto is supported by Brown Media Services and the Canvas Media Library is supported by Brown Digital Learning & Design.
Assessment and Feedback
  • Google Assignments
    • A tool that makes it simpler to manage assignments based on Google Docs and Google Drive. Available through Canvas. 
       
  • Gradescope
    • An assessment platform that helps instructors grade both online and in-person assignments more efficiently, especially for larger classes. Available through Canvas for courses and as a standalone service. 
       
  • Peerceptiv
    • A peer-review platform for Canvas that allows students to submit work, review the work of others, and receive feedback. The tool is designed to engage students in critical thinking and enable authentic assessments for most class sizes. Available through Canvas. 
       
  • Top Hat
    • A student engagement platform that allows instructors to pose questions and visualize student responses in real time, making presentations more interactive. Available through Canvas for courses and as a standalone service. 
       
  • Turnitin
    • A tool that compares student papers with a vast array of online sources and paper repositories and returns a detailed report on similarities. Available through Canvas. 
Access and Inclusion
  • Course Reserves
    • A tool that helps instructors create, maintain, reactivate, and share reading lists with students that include all material types such as books, articles, and media. Available through Canvas and the Library's course reserves platform directly.
       
  • Namecoach
    • A service that allows students to create an audio recording to help professors and peers better pronounce their names. Available through Canvas. 
       
  • UDOIT
    • A tool for monitoring and improving web accessibility in Canvas. Available through Canvas by request, as we are currently piloting the newest version. 

Approved, But Not Supported

Brown Office of Information Technology (OIT) has reviewed these tools to ensure they meet the appropriate standards for privacy, security, and accessibility. DLD does not provide direct support for these tools. 

Engagement and Collaboration
  • H5P
    • A platform for creating and sharing interactive web content. Available as an open source tool at h5p.org.
       
  • Miro
    • A collaborative whiteboard tool that enables visual brainstorming, annotation, and information presentation. Available from Miro through their free for EDU program.   
Productivity
  • Microsoft Office 365
    • A cloud-based version of the popular Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. Available to anyone at Brown and supported by Brown's IT Service Center.
       
  • Qualtrics
    • A survey tool that allows users to distribute questions, collect responses, and analyze results. Available to anyone at Brown and support by Brown's IT Service Center
       
  • SensusAccess 
    • A platform for improving document accessibility and delivering multiple formats, based on Brown's self-service tool, SensusAccess.
       
  • Trello
    • A visual tool for managing work, projects, and tasks collaboratively. Available from Trello directly. 
Publisher Content in Canvas

Many digital textbook publishers have tools that deliver content and experiences in Canvas. Tools from the following publishers have been approved by the Brown Bookstore, OIT, and DLD.

DLD does not recommend using these tools at this time. The terms of service, privacy, security and/or accessibility of these tools do not currently meet Office of Information Technology (OIT) standards.
