How to Annotate Student Submissions in Canvas

Speedgrader contains tools to annotate student papers. Instructors and TAs can use these tools to mark up .pdf, .doc/.docx, and .ppt/.pptx. assignments (.xls/.xlsx files are currently in Crocodoc beta testing).

  1. The toolbar offers the annotation options:

  • Point Comment allows for comment on a specific point within the document. Click the relevant point, then enter text in the comment box that appears.
  • Highlighter lets instructors hightlight a section of text. Click and drag the cursor to select text. You can also double click on text to highlight single words.
  • Text Box provides a comment box for instructors to enter a note. Click anywhere in the document to create a text box. You can select the ink color, font size, and background color. To move the textbox, click an edge and drag the text box.
  • Strikethrough is a tool that places a red line over selected text. Choose text by clicking and dragging your cursor. You can also double click on text to strike out a single word. A textbox will appear next to the text. Enter alternative text with your preferred text color, text size, and textbox color settings.
  • The Paint Brush let's instructors draw freeform lines and circles. Click and drag the cursor in the pattern you wish to draw. Click the checkmark icon to save your drawing.
  • Click Area Comment to comment on a general area within the document. Click and drag a rectangle around the relevant area, then enter text in the comment box that appears.
  1. To reply to or delete a comment, move your cursor over a comment box, then click Reply or Delete.

How to Download Student Submissions

Instructors and TAs can also download student submissions to review them outside of Canvas and re-upload the annotated documents. Note that if a student has submitted the assignment more than once, the Submission to viewmenu shows prior submissions. Select the appropriate submission.

  1. To submit a grade for the student's assignment, enter the grade in the grade box.

  2. To submit a comment on the evaluated assignment, enter text in the Add a Commentbox. You can also attach a file or a media comment by clicking one of the icons in the Attach list. When you are ready to submit your comment and grade, click Submit
