Learn how to request a Canvas site for your course.
Note, CourseTools access is only available to Brown Instructors, Graduate TAs, and university staff members. Undergraduate students do not have access to CourseTools. If a student tries to log in, they will be redirected to [email protected], where they can view courses and their associated syllabi.
If you would like to reactivate a course form another semester, first request a new course site and then import content from another course site.
How to Request a Canvas Site
Visit coursetools.brown.edu and login with your Brown credentials if prompted.
You will select a term from the "Select Term" menu located at the top of the window, along with the options to view courses by "Subject" or "Instructor" from the "Select View" box.
- A new page will load based on the options you selected. Find and select the course you want to have a Canvas site created.
Your course page will appear next with a list of multiple request options for an instructor to choose from including Upload Syllabus, Request Google Group, etc..
Important note: Instructors teaching multiple course sections will have a page appear at this point asking if they would like to combine them. If an instructor wishes to use a single Canvas course for all of those sections, they should select the "Combine" button. If you do not wish to combine them, select "Do Not Combine". For instructions on how to Combine you Canvas site and FAQs about combining sites, view the "How Do I Combine My Canvas Site Sections?".
If a class has multiple sections with different primary instructors, and the instructors wish to only use a single Canvas course for all of those sections, a Canvas site for each section will need to be created in order to be able to merge the secondary sections into the primary section. If you would like your courses merged, please contact [email protected].
To merge cross-listed courses under a single Canvas site, request individual Canvas sites for each section first. Then, contact [email protected] with details on how your cross-listed site should be the primary and the order of course codes in the title.
Choose the option in box under the "Tools" header for Canvas. Select the red "Request Canvas" button inside the Canvas box. The system will take a moment to generate your Canvas course link. You may have to refresh the page for the link to appear. The course creation process typically takes 5 minutes.
Once the site is created, a link will appear next to the words, "Canvas has been provisioned" in the Canvas request box. This link will take you directly to your Canvas course.
