The Sheridan Center’s Digital Learning and Design (DLD) team is pleased to share important updates regarding learning technologies at Brown for Summer 2026.
Updated Canvas Features
Enhanced Rubrics Enabled
Canvas Rubrics have received a significant interface and functional upgrade. The Enhanced Rubrics feature is now fully enabled across all Brown Canvas course sites. This update provides a more intuitive, drag-and-drop building experience, clearer grading workflows for instructors, and a cleaner, more transparent view for students looking at assignment feedback. This feature update required no manual migration and was automatically pushed to all courses at Brown.
The Classic Rubrics interface will remain available until December 19. After that date, Instructure will remove the option from Canvas, and all rubrics will be viewed using the enhanced rubric interface
Canvas Integrated Tool Updates
VitalSource Replacing RedShelf
Please note that VitalSource has officially replaced RedShelf as our primary integrated ebook delivery platform in Canvas. If you utilize digital textbooks or inclusive access materials for your course, students will now access their readings through the VitalSource tool link that you will enable in Canvas by following these step by step instructions. For questions regarding the transition and program, email the Brown Bookstore at [email protected]. If the tool is not loading in your course, please email [email protected].
Please note the RedShelf tool will be visible in courses that were created before this update for a period of time. We will update this article with the details of RedShelfs complete removal, once the date has been determined by the vendor and Brown.
SensusAccess
We are excited to share that SensusAccess, a self-service file conversion tool, is now integrated directly within Canvas. This tool allows students and instructors to automatically convert course documents into a wide range of alternative formats for improved accessibility, including searchable PDFs, audio MP3s, digital Braille, and structured e-books.
Learn more about using the SensusAccess tool in our Canvas@Brown article.
Canvas EPortfolio Feature Retired, Jun 30, 2026
Please be advised that the Canvas ePortfolio feature tool will no longer be available starting on June 30, 2026.
To ensure you do not lose any of your work, we strongly recommend that you export your existing content before this date. After June 30, these tools and any data stored within them will no longer be accessible.
If you have any questions or need assistance with the export process, please email [email protected].
