Why did my Undergraduate TA’s role change to Undergraduate TA Grader?

Updated on

The existing process to provide UTA with elevated access to Speegrader as part of their course responsibilities, is currently being updated. Instructors can now request elevated access for specific Undergraduate TAs rather than having all UTAs get elevated access.

What is changing?

For courses that have requested an elevated access exception for the Undergraduate TAs, their role will be changing to help faculty identify Undergraduate TAs that have received the elevated access:

  • Old UTA role name:  Undergraduate TA*
  • New UTA role name:  Undergraduate TA Grader

* Going forward, the old role of Undergraduate TA will now only be used for Undergraduate TAs that do not have elevated access.

Why is the role name changing?

This change is to account for upcoming changes to the UTA Elevated Access process. Which will allow instructors to request elevated access for specific Undergraduate TAs rather than having all UTAs get elevated access.  Eventually, we hope that elevated UTA access will be incorporated into the Add/Remove Brown Users LTI.

When will this process change?

This change will take place in 2 phases as outlined below.

Expand or collapse content Phase 1:  Requesting elevated UTA access for specific users via request form (Undergraduate TA Grader) - Summer 2026

Phase 1 of this process will allow instructors to continue to request UTA elevated access exceptions through this UTA elevated access form. The distinction being that instructors will now be able to identify which specific UTAs in their course should receive the elevated access.

Once enrolled, instructors will be able to distinguish between non-grading UTAs (Undergraduate TA) and grading TAs (Undergraduate TA Grader) based on the role they have in the People tool.

This new request process will begin for Summer 2026 - but the role will be applied to all courses in Canvas that had/have UTAs that received elevated access.  If you are teaching in Summer 2026, you can submit the form now to request elevated access for specific UTAs in your course now.

During Phase 1 - if you at any point need to remove an Undergraduate TA Grader from your course, you will need to contact [email protected] to have that person/role removed from you course.

Expand or collapse content Phase 2:  Instructor add elevated UTAs via Add/Remove Brown Users tool - Fall 2026 (anticipated)

The second phase of this process will allow instructors to use the Add/Remove Brown Users LTI to add Undergraduates with elevated access on their own.

Instructors will need to sign off on the usual requirements each time they add a new user with the Undergraduate TA Grader role.
